Candy Crowley, tool

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/cnn-amplifies-romneys-bogus-jobs-claims/2012/01/15/gIQA29Zt0P_blog.html
Yesterday the Romney campaign distributed a memo to reporters that attacked Obama’s record on jobs as a “failure.” To support this conclusion, the memo cited, among other things, the “net” job loss that has occurred on Obama’s watch.

“In January 2009, some 22 million Americans were unemployed, underemployed, or no longer looking for work. Today, that number has risen to nearly 24 million Americans,” the memo said. “Nearly 1.7 million jobs have been lost.”

This use of that “net” job loss number, which is technically true in the most narrow sense, is at best highly misleading and dishonest. That’s because it factors in the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of thousands of jobs the economy was hemorrhaging in the months just after Obama took office, when the economy was in free fall — before Obama’s policies kicked in. Yet the Romney camp has again and again presented this “net” job loss number as proof that those same policies have failed.

Today on CNN, Candy Crowley confronted David Axelrod with this same number — and presented it as a meaningful one, just as the Romney camp continues to do. . . .

Will the theocrats sit out 2012?

http://prospect.org/article/rights-man
Around 150 bigwigs from the social conservative movement gathered in Texas Friday night to endorse a candidate. Organizers didn't come out and say it, but the implicit goal of the gathering was to rally around a single alternative to Mitt Romney before he rolls past the competition in South Carolina and Florida. . . .

While [Family Research Council President Tony] Perkins stressed the group's collective desire to displace Obama in the fall, he couldn't assure reporters that the full group would support the eventual Republican nominee. "Based upon what participants said … if Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich, or Rick Santorum would clear the nomination there would be passionate support," Perkins said, "beyond that I can't necessarily say." . . .

The vice president and cabinet officials, as well as governors and senators elected over the course of the administration, are historically major sources for a party’s next round of candidates. The Bush years had the opposite effect. . . . [read on]

It's not just the amount of pandering to the super-rich that's so breathtaking, it's the lockstep unanimity. At all costs, every single Republican candidate knows that he has to promise the ultra-wealthy a huge tax break as the price of staying in the race. Well, the “Good Newt” experiment certainly didn’t last long

http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/01/nasty-newts-positive-campaign-already-a-fading-memory.php
Gingrich made clear on Wednesday that his campaign would be on offense soon, telling MSNBC that “we’re going to be defining Romney out of the mainstream of the Republican party.” His campaign has already sought to paint him as a “Massachusetts moderate” in press releases and public events.

He had said earlier in the week that Romney “would buy the election if he could” and accused his rival of being a “liar” by distancing himself from independent attack ads against him.

Ironically, a Super PAC set up by one of Gingrich’s longtime aides, Rick Tyler, is preparing to do exactly the same thing in South Carolina and possibly New Hampshire, announcing plans on Tuesday to “define” Romney in new ads. Gingrich has said in the past he would condemn such behavior from groups that support his candidacy. . . .

http://www.balloon-juice.com/2012/01/04/expect-more-of-this/
[John Cole] When you ask yourself why Newt is going on the attack, it’s really just a matter of the scorpion and the frog- that is who Newt is. His modus operandi is to just attack, attack, attack, wreak as much destruction as possible, and hope he comes out on top. Just ask Bob Michel. And as you saw when a lot of former House members came forward and cautioned about Gingrich, this is not unknown. He thrives in chaos, in large part because he lives for it, but also because his stream of unmitigated bullshit is held to less scrutiny while everyone is diverted by the blood and guts. . . .

“The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical,” Santorum said in Spartanburg on Tuesday. “And that is what the perception is by the American left who hates Christendom.” . . [read on]

Farewell to the Mean Girl

[Steve Benen] [A]s the Minnesotan leaves the presidential campaign trail, it’s worth pausing to appreciate how absurd it is that Bachmann sought the Republican presidential nomination in the first place.

The unhinged lawmaker is arguably the most ridiculous person in Washington. She proudly embraces bizarre conspiracy theories; she routinely says crazy things on national television; she pretends to grasp public policies she doesn’t understand; and her worldview is comparable to someone who’s suffered a serious head trauma. Even as the Republican Party leaps off a right-wing cliff, Bachmann stands out for her unique brand of madness.

Even in a radicalized party and the most extreme House majority caucus in generations, Bachmann stands out as one of Congress’ most loony-tunes members. To put it gently, she’s stark raving mad.

That there was a point in this race at which Bachmann was actually taken seriously as a candidate for national office is a national embarrassment.

She didn’t endorse any of the other candidates, but her exit is clearly good news for Rick Santorum . . .

Romney wins Iowa by a nose! In a photo finish! After a neck and neck battle down the stretch! (Excited yet?)

Four years — and a few million additional bucks later — Mitt Romney managed to get just about exactly the same number and percentage of votes in Iowa as he did in 2008.

Meet The Theocrat (looks like he’ll be with us for a while)

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/comment/2012/01/santorum-and-the-republicans.html
[George Packer] In the tenth paragraph of a page A15 Times piece, Rick Santorum accuses Barack Obama of engaging in “absolutely un-American activities.” What are they? The article doesn’t say. The quote appears without explanation or comment, in an article entitled “Santorum’s Challenge: Broaden His Appeal Beyond Evangelical Christians.” Nor does the line show up anywhere else on the Web—apparently no reporter in the mob following the candidates through the last days before the Iowa caucuses thought it worth writing down, and no blogger thought it worth repeating. It was just a throwaway line, a hunk of spoiled red meat tossed at the crowd in a Sioux City coffee shop, no more newsworthy than saying, “It’s a great day to be an Iowan!” And the crowd ate it up, applauding lustily. According to the Times, Santorum, surging in the polls, “became emotional at times.” He “wore a beaming smile on his face.” He said that he was running for his children’s sake. A supporter from a nearby town said that he liked Santorum for his avoidance of hyperbole: “Santorum doesn’t make crazy statements.”

[Josh Marshall] Newt Gingrich. Newt looked tired tonight. He looked all of his 68 years. But through that he’s mad. And Newt Gingrich has a great capacity for anger. He says he’s going to keep fighting for the nomination. And at some level I buy that. But what seemed much more clear is that he has a new goal in this campaign, maybe in life: hurt Mitt Romney. That’s dangerous for Romney. There are more debates coming. Newt’s good at debates. And reporters love drama. That’s hazardous for Romney. . .

[Jonathan Bernstein] Newt Gingrich never had a chance to be the Republican nominee for president in 2012 or any other year. I'll go back to what I said before his very first collapse back in the spring: he's Sarah Palin without the fanatical supporters but with the marital history of John Edwards. In other words, he has no natural constituency that would stick with him no matter what, Washingtonians don't like or trust him, and there's an opposition research file that's so enormous that he can be attacked effectively by any candidate in any electoral context. . . . But I can see another possible future for the disgraced former Speaker. . . . [read on]

Michele Bachmann finished dead last in yesterday’s caucuses. Although in a speech last night she vowed to soldier on, her campaign has scheduled a press conference for today in Wes Des Moines and speculation is running high that she cut short her presidential bid. . .

The most ominous sign for the GOP might be the low turnout in Iowa after the Tea Party–driven enthusiasms of 2010. Roughly 123,000 of 640,000 registered Republicans in the state turned out to vote, along the lines of 2008, when dueling Democrats absorbed most of the electoral energy. . . .

Unsurprisingly, [hard-right conservative television preacher Pat Robertson] said God is no fan of President Obama: “Your president holds a radical view of the direction of your country which is at odds with the majority, expect chaos and paralysis.” Robertson claimed that the country would be devastated by an “economic collapse” and “the country will begin disintegrating.” He also claimed that God revealed to him who the next president will be, but that he is “not supposed to talk about that.” . .
