The deep constitutional scholars of the Republican party are now ready to blow up the whole system because of a couple of Supreme Court decisions they don't like

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) has proposed a constitutional amendment that would subject Supreme Court justices to periodic judicial elections in the wake of rulings that upheld a key portion of the Affordable Care Act and affirmed gay couples' right to marriage. . .

What the GOPers forget is that this is THEIR Supreme Court, with a rock-solid five person conservative majority. When people like Roberts or Kennedy vote against them, what it really shows is how extreme their desires are -- ideologues like Scalia, Thomas, and Alito stick with them, but not thoughtful jurists, even conservative ones

The Supreme Court supports gay marriage

Justice Kennedy today wrote the opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges, finding state bans on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, and securing full marriage equality for gays and lesbians across America.  What’s more, he swung for the fences, rejecting Chief Justice Roberts’s judicial minimalism to write a sweeping 5-4 opinion that reads like a manifesto in favor of same-sex marriage—ironically using many conservative arguments for marriage to do so. . . .
"No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right." [read on]

The Supreme Court dissenters

Scalia: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/06/26/scalia-burns-the-supreme-court-as-a-group-of-unrepresentative-elitists/

For all the blaze of history and march of freedom this week, no doubt for me the highlight was Justice Scalia's invoking John C. Calhoun's "concurrent majority" theory on behalf of denying marriage equality to gay men and women.

Roberts: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/john-roberts-gay-marriage-dissent--2
"Indeed, however heartened the proponents of same-sex marriage might be on this day, it is worth acknowledging what they have lost, and lost forever: the opportunity to win the true acceptance that comes from persuading their fellow citizens of the justice of their cause. And they lose this just when the winds of change were freshening at their backs."

I was also quite struck, as you were, Mark, by the language in the various dissents in Obergefell, not just for their vehemence, but for the ways in which each dissent feels like a kind of Rorschach test of each justice’s own anxieties. . . .

Some Republicans Want Their Party To Just Shut Up About Gay Marriage Now

Within hours of the Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage, an array of conservatives including the governors of Texas and Louisiana and religious groups called for stronger legal protections for those who want to avoid any involvement in same-sex marriage, like catering a gay wedding or providing school housing to gay couples, based on religious beliefs.  They demanded establishing clear religious exemptions from discrimination laws, tax penalties or other government regulations for individuals, businesses and religious-affiliated institutions wishing to avoid endorsing such marriages. . . .
