CRISS CROSS

It look as if Clinton, with a big assist from Trump, will attract significant support from moderate Republicans, along with a near sweep of minority and female voters. This will be an extraordinary combination of electoral forces. A lot of conservatives will either look for a third party, or stay home.

I see no way Trump can avoid a devastating loss.

But it does raise the question of how far to the right Clinton will have to go on foreign policy issues to hold this coalition together. With Trump's increasingly isolationist, noninterventionist rhetoric (literally -- build a wall around us, leave us alone), it will put some progressives in a tough spot. It's the one area in which he might tempt some Sandernistas to cross over in the other direction

STEVE SCHMIDT: You're going to see a concerted and organized effort by the Hillary Clinton campaign to go after senior members of the Republican foreign policy establishment. Big names. I'm not trying to put a partisan imprint on David Petraeus. But names like Petraeus, retired General Odierno, Colin Powell, Brent Scowcroft. Men and women who served in senior positions, in national security positions, in Republican administrations. The Clinton campaign's going to go after them. . . . [read on]

Donald Trump Isn’t Going to Be President

He's a UNITER (well, not really)

https://politicalwire.com/2016/05/04/bonus-quote-of-the-day-853/
“I am confident that I can unite much of it. There are parts of it I don’t want.”
    — Donald Trump, quoted by NBC News, on whether he can unite the Republican party as its presidential nominee.

"I don’t think it’s imperative that the entire party come together," Trump told MSNBC's Morning Joe on Wednesday. "I don’t want everybody. I don’t even want certain people who were extraordinarily nasty. Let them wait eight years. Or let them wait 16 years or whatever." . . .

Here's the dangerous reality: Trump would rather destroy than lose. The real danger, as we saw during his rallies, is that he is perfectly prepared to incite the darkest inclinations among his supporters. This isn't a contest for him -- it's a battle to the death. With a female opponent, it is going to get very, very ugly

Trump: Hillary should 'suffer'

The fascination of the media with the "colorful" Trump helped boost him into the bizarre position of being taken seriously as a potential president. The basic journalism and fact checking that would have showed him for what he is have been pushed to the margins: Because he's good tee vee!

http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2016/05/04/donald-trump-says-hes-open-to-doing-something-on-minimum-wage/?partner=rss&emc=rss
Within 24 hours of becoming the de facto leader of the Republican Party, Donald J. Trump on Wednesday declared himself open to raising the minimum wage, a flip-flop from his statement during the primaries that the rate was already too high. . . .

Kevin Drum has a dilemma

http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2016/05/readers-please-help-give-me-some-direction-next-six-months
The biggest problem with Donald Trump is that he's a charlatan and a demagogue who could do immense damage to the United States. But this is my blog, which means everything is about me me me. And my biggest problem with Trump is trying to figure out just how much to mock the guy. Given the amount of crap that spills out of his mouth daily, I could do nothing but mock Trump and easily keep this blog churning along for the next six months.

For example, a few weeks ago Trump was asked if women who get abortions should be punished. "The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment," he said. "Yes, there has to be some form." Today, Jonah Goldberg passes along Trump's follow-up on Morning Joe:

WILLIE GEIST: What about what you told Chris Matthews a few weeks ago, which is that women who get abortions should be punished? Do you still believe that to be true?

TRUMP: No, he was asking me a theoretical, or just a question in theory, and I talked about it only from that standpoint. Of course not. And that was done, he said, you know, I guess it was theoretically, but he was asking a rhetorical question, and I gave an answer. And by the way, people thought from an academic standpoint, and, asked rhetorically, people said that answer was an unbelievable academic answer! But of course not, and I said that afterwards.

Wow. The Trump spokesperson they roll out when they REALLY want some shameless heavy-duty b.s. shoveling now says that Clinton ‘Has Never Been Truly Vetted Before'

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/katrina-pierson-clinton-never-vetted

Will the Repubs launch a third party candidate?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/plan-c-republican-establishment-chattering-about-a-third-party-run_us_57295dcbe4b016f378941d68?heeutafvfarnh1if6r

Will the Repubs lose the Senate?

https://politicalwire.com/2016/05/04/how-bad-is-the-outlook-for-senate-republicans/
“Republicans can afford to lose only a net of three Senate seats to hold their majority, and the party is already defending seven states — Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Florida, and Iowa — that President Barack Obama won twice.”  “With Trump, though, many Republicans become despondent. One Senate campaign veteran last month estimated that the party had a 75 percent chance of losing the majority. Another put the odds at 80 percent.”

More: https://politicalwire.com/2016/05/04/big-gop-donors-wont-give-to-trump/
Washington Examiner: “Repelled by Trump and convinced he can’t beat Hillary Clinton, wealthy GOP contributors are abandoning the presidential contest and directing their lucrative networks to spend to invest in protecting vulnerable Republican majorities in the House and Senate. . . . But on policy and fitness for the presidency, the party’s most active contributors and bundlers simply can’t bring themselves to support their front-runner, reluctantly preferring a Clinton administration that is checked by a GOP congress.”

Now the Repubs face an interesting choice on Merrick Garland, Obama's Supreme Court choice. With Trump as the GOP nominee, they have to know that their likelihood of having a Republican president to nominate a replacement next year is virtually nil -- and they might even lose their majority, which means little to no leverage on the selection of the next nominee at all. What do they do now?

Trump is winning because he appeals to a Republican Party base that thinks white people are getting screwed and doesn't much like all the non-white people they think are doing the screwing. So they're all pretty happy about Trump's wall and his proposed Muslim ban and his endless griping about "political correctness." At its core, Trump's appeal is fundamentally racist. . . .

Trump's going to lose -- probably overwhelmingly. Here's why

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/05/gops-impending-florida-apocalypse.html
[A] Democratic ticket carrying Florida plus those states every Democrat has carried since 1992 would have 271 electoral votes and the White House. That means Democrats could spot Republicans nearly all of the "battleground states" we are used to talking about — New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico — and they'd still win with Florida and the states Bill Clinton and Barack Obama won twice and Al Gore and John Kerry won in their one opportunity. . . .

https://politicalwire.com/2016/05/04/trump-would-need-to-dramatically-alter-map-to-win/
Wall Street Journal: “So to triumph, Mr. Trump will have to alter the electoral map in historically dramatic ways. He will have to wrest away not just a few states—like Colorado, Virginia, Nevada or New Mexico—that went with Mr. Obama in both 2008 and 2012 and appear to be turning reliably blue. He will also almost certainly have to grab a couple of states—like Michigan, Pennsylvania or Wisconsin—that haven’t fallen into the R column since the 1980s.”

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/05/trumps-firsts-and-near-firsts-as-prez-nominee.html
1. He's the first major-party nominee since Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952 never to have held elective office.
2. Trump is the fifth major-party nominee to have been divorced, after Stevenson, Reagan, McCain, and Kerry. But he's the first double divorcée.
3. He's the first New Yorker to head a ticket since — this is the answer to a good trivia question — Richard M. Nixon in 1968.
4. Trump is the only the second major-party nominee with entertainment-business experience prior to entering politics.
5. It's unclear if Trump is the wealthiest of presidential nominees.
6. On the flip side of the ledger, Trump is not the first major-party nominee to resort to the bankruptcy laws. [read on]

[John Podesta] "Fundamentally, our next president will need to do two things: keep our nation safe in a dangerous world and help working families get ahead here at home. Donald Trump is not prepared to do either. Throughout this campaign, Donald Trump has demonstrated that he’s too divisive and lacks the temperament to lead our nation and the free world. With so much at stake, Donald Trump is simply too big of a risk. Hillary Clinton has proven that she has the strength to keep us safe in an uncertain world and a lifelong record of fighting to break down the barriers--economic and social--that hold working families back. While Donald Trump seeks to bully and divide Americans, Hillary Clinton will unite us to create an economy that works for everyone."

http://www.vox.com/2016/5/3/11585412/elizabeth-warren-donald-trump-indiana-primary
[Elizabeth Warren] Donald Trump is now the leader of the Republican Party. It's real – he is one step away from the White House. Here's what else is real:  Trump has built his campaign on racism, sexism, and xenophobia. There's more enthusiasm for him among leaders of the KKK than leaders of the political party he now controls.  He incites supporters to violence, praises Putin, and, according to a columnist who recently interviewed him, is "cool with being called an authoritarian" and doesn't mind associations with history's worst dictators.

CONTESTED

Saying the superdelegates should follow the popular vote in a state confuses the reason why there are superdelegates in the first place. It also confuses the principles of direct democracy with representative democracy. The party nominating process is not a direct democracy -- and there's no reason it should be

Why Bernie Sanders is lobbying superdelegates — even though they won't save his campaign

On Bernie's claim that he's "more electable" (He's not!)

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2016/05/bernie_sanders_electability_argument_is_still_a_myth.html
He has never been asked to account for his relationship with the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party, for which he served as a presidential elector in 1980. At the time, the party’s platform called for abolishing the U.S. military budget and proclaimed “solidarity” with revolutionary Iran. (This was in the middle of the Iranian hostage crisis.) There’s been little cable news chatter about Sanders’ 1985 trip to Nicaragua, where he reportedly joined a Sandinista rally with a crowd chanting, “Here, there, everywhere/ The Yankee will die.” . . .

The Clinton campaign has also ignored Sanders’ youthful sex writings. Republicans are unlikely to be so decorous. Imagine an ad drawing from the old Sanders essay “The Revolution Is Life Versus Death.” First it might quote the candidate mocking taboos on child nudity: “Now, if children go around naked, they are liable to see each others [sic] sexual organs, and maybe even touch them. Terrible thing!” Then it would quote him celebrating girls who defy their mothers and have sex with their boyfriends: “The revolution comes … when a girl pushes aside all that her mother has ‘taught’ her and accepts her boyfriends [sic] love.” Finally, it would remind viewers that Sanders was one of 14 congressmen to vote against the law establishing the Amber Alert system and one of 15 to vote against an amendment criminalizing computer-generated child pornography. . . . It takes no special political insight to see that Republicans will try to make Sanders seem like a sexual weirdo. Will it work? I have no idea, but there’s no shorter route to the frightened lizard brain of the American electorate than dark talk about children and sex.

One could go on and on in this vein. My colleague William Saletan has already written about how support for Sanders’ positions tends to fall apart when people hear the details—particularly if they learn their own taxes would go up. As the nominee, Sanders would have to address his former opposition to public schools and praise for parents who believe that it is “better for their children not to go to school at all than for them to attend a normal type of establishment.” He’d have to explain whether he still feels that sexual repression causes cancer, whether he still opposes the concept of private charity, and whether he still supports the public takeover of the television industry.

One also assumes Republicans would, in keeping with Karl Rove’s playbook, try to hit Sanders where he’s strongest—on issues of financial integrity. They’d probably do it by going after Jane Sanders, who has been accused of trying to defraud the Catholic Church on a land deal she undertook as president of Burlington College. (After being forced out of that job, she received a $200,000 golden parachute.) If you think this can’t blow up, remember that Hillary Clinton never personally profited off of Whitewater, the land deal that became a pretext for endless investigations of her and her husband. . . .

Here's a question I ask myself, Why in the world would any Sanders supporter consider switching to Trump? And what does it say about that segment of Sanders' support?
