Why would the GOP balk at a corporate tax cut?

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/07/31/obama-can-best-weaken-the-gop-by-courting-its-traditional-business-backers.html
At this point it goes without saying that anything Obama proposes is DOA. So he can’t get that done. But he can get something else done: Pry the nutso GOP away from its traditional constituencies one by one, so that all they’re left with is the Tea Party lunatic fringe. . . .

Yesterday’s proposal was as follows: Obama offered to lower the corporate tax rate to 28 percent (from the current 35 percent) in exchange for some infrastructure investments. Republicans have been clamoring for a lower corporate rate since forever. Even many Democrats support this—the U.S. corporate rate is among the developed world’s highest, and the idea that the rate should be lowered in exchange for closing some capacious corporate loopholes has long been an idea that a lot of Democrats are fine with. But fundamentally, it should be something that gets Republicans’ juices flowing. They’re the party of corporate America, right? . . . [read on]

Do conservatives really want to prevent poor people from getting health insurance via Obamacare?

http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/07/30/19774873-the-refuse-to-enroll-campaign-gets-to-work
When Reuters reported last week that Republicans and their allies "are mobilizing ... to dissuade uninsured Americans from obtaining health coverage," it caused a bit of a stir. After all, what kind of people would invest time and energy into convincing struggling families to turn down access to affordable health care? Who would be so callous as to put partisan spite over the basic health care needs of their community?
Well, now we know.. . . [read on]
This doesn't come as a surprise anymore, since Brase is hardly the first conservative to do this, but it's still a remarkable display of spite and meanspiritedness. Conservatives are just hellbent on trying to keep poor people from getting decent health coverage. The right-wing intelligentsia can claim otherwise, but the plain truth is that no one in the actual governing wing of the Republican Party wants to replace Obamacare with anything else. They just want to repeal it, full stop. For some reason, the mere idea of poor and working-class people getting medical care with taxpayer help drives them into conniptions.. . .

This is what happens when the entire wing of a party is virtually guaranteed re-election

Weiner has dropped from first place, and 26 percent, in Quinnipiac’s previous survey, to fourth place and 16 percent.. . .

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/07/anthony-weiner-campaign-ad-quit-video.html
Sydney Leathers, still milking her fifteen minutes in the spotlight for everything it's worth, called her former cyber-lover a "needy little bitch" on Howard Stern's radio show, and announced that she's "planning to do a photo shoot" outside Weiner's apartment soon. Weiner continued to resist calls to drop out of the mayoral race — including, reportedly, from the Clintons . . .

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/07/31/lies-anthony-weiner-told-me.html
How many falsehoods can you utter in eight minutes? If you’re Anthony Weiner, at least 68.. . .

Now this: http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2013/07/top-weiner-aide-trashes-intern.php
The campaign staff awoke to see their former intern, Olivia Nuzzi, on the front cover of the Daily News. Inside the paper was an article bylined by Nuzzi in which she told a rather unflattering tale of her experience working on Anthony Weiner’s mayoral bid.

Now, Team Weiner is firing back. TPM called Weiner’s communications director Barbara Morgan to discuss an unrelated story Tuesday and she went off on a curse-filled rant about Nuzzi, describing her as a fame hungry “bitch” who “sucked” at her job. Morgan also called Nuzzi a “slutbag,” “twat,” and “cunt” while threatening to sue her. . . .

http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/intern-reveals-reasons-joining-weiner-campaign-article-1.1412272
[Nuzzi] My reasons for joining Anthony Weiner’s mayoral campaign were not complicated. . . Since high school, I had interned for political campaigns in New Jersey. One morning, several of my friends sent me links to the same online ad for the Weiner campaign, seeking applications for internships. .. . Their hope was to make a connection with Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, and thus forge a potential connection to her longtime boss, Hillary Clinton, to get an inside track for a campaign position if she ran for president in 2016. . . .

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/30/weiner-slutbag-intern_n_3679770.html
"In a moment of frustration, I used inappropriate language in what I thought was an off the record conversation," Morgan said in a statement. "It was wrong and I am very sorry, which is what I said tonight when I called and emailed Olivia to apologize."

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/07/weiner-spokeswoman-calls-former-intern-slutbag.html
TPM editor and publisher Josh Marshall writes via e-mail: "The conversation was definitely on the record.  And I can tell you with certainty that the phrase 'between us' was never spoken during the entirety of the conversation."

Weiner: http://cookpolitical.com/story/6015
I’m not naïve. I get that sex sells. I know the Anthony Weiner saga is buzzy and great for ratings. But, in the end, it’s terrible for those of us who love covering politics, and for the institution of public service itself. Weiner cheapens the thing that we are trying to convince Americans (and in some cases our bosses at news organizations), is so valuable: the role of government in American life.  At a time when trust in Washington is at an all-time low, Weiner – and guys like Elliot Spitzer and Bob Filner -  are another reminder to Americans about of how incredibly dysfunctional and disconnected government is.

And, at some point, this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If everyone thinks that politics is a freak show, then only the freaks will run. It’s already hard enough to get “good” people to run for office. Few normal people are willing to put their lives on hold and on display for the whole world to judge.  Now, between a Congress that is in total paralysis and a growing perception that politics is only for the narcissistic and self-serving, the good ones have even less incentive to run.
