Trump, the Great Deal Maker, has broken countless campaign promises. Where is the infrastructure bill? Lower drug prices? His replacement for Obamacare ("better," "cheaper")? Term limits? Restrictions on lobbying? Campaign finance reform? Taxing the rich? (ha!)
“President Trump likes nothing more than presenting himself as the ultimate deal maker, the master negotiator who can translate his success in business into the worlds of politics, policy and diplomacy,” the New York Times reports. “Except that so far he has not. As he threw in the towel on immigration legislation on Friday, saying that Republicans should give up even trying until after the fall midterm elections, Mr. Trump once again fell short of his promise to make ‘beautiful’ deals that no other president could make.” “His 17 months in office have in fact been an exercise in futility. . .”

Trump doesn't want an immigration bill . . . He'd rather have the political issue than the policy victory. Call it the art of no deal. . . . "What he lacks in understanding of actual immigration policy, he makes up for with a keen understanding of the dark border security themes that pervade the GOP. He knows anger motivates more than contentment." . . .

“In interviews across the country over the last few days, dozens of Trump voters, as well as pollsters and strategists, described something like a bonding experience with the president that happens each time Republicans have to answer a now-familiar question: ‘How can you possibly still support this man?’ Their resilience suggests a level of unity among Republicans that could help mitigate Mr. Trump’s low overall approval ratings and aid his party’s chances of keeping control of the House of Representatives in November.” “Republican voters repeatedly described an instinctive, protective response to the president, and their support has grown in recent months . . .”

Let's just review, shall we? An ill-considered and cruel policy to separate children from their parents is cooked up in the squalid little mind of Stephen Miller, with a big assist from Jeff Sessions. The idea was that the fear of losing their kids would act as a deterrent to asylum seekers coming into the U.S. As the consequences of this evil plan became apparent on the nightly news -- screaming children, chain-link cages, -- Trump argued more and more implausibly that they had no choice: this policy was forced on them by a "Democrat law." None of that was true. It was a Trump gang policy from start to finish and he could end it any time with just a phone call. Confronted with a possible electoral meltdown, Trump reversed course and, days after saying the policy could not be ended by executive order, he signed an executive order hastily thrown together, with typos, simply so he could sign something before jetting off for a political rally. The resulting executive order is of doubtful legality, no one knows what the new policy is supposed to be, and the order does nothing for the more than 2000 kids already separated from their parents -- many of whom will NEVER be reunited. Now we learn that the policy of family separation will actually still continue, there are no plans for reunited families, they can't even track where the kids have gone, and the Trump admin is planning for up to 20,000 kids to be kept on U.S. military bases. This isn't "making it up as you go along," this is "can't make up your mind what you are trying to accomplish in the first place"

The Trump administration's complete lack of compassion

In Fox World
Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade defended President Trump on Friday by pointing out that while his harsh “zero tolerance” policy may have resulted in thousands of children being separated from their parents at the southern border, at least the kids affected aren’t Americans.  “Like it or not, these aren’t our kids. Show them compassion, but it’s not like he’s doing this to the people of Idaho or Texas,” he said. “These are people from another country.” Host Ainsley Earhardt replied by saying that Trump “just wants to make sure we vet who’s coming across the border, in case it’s MS-13 or drugs.” . . .

“Tense arguments broke out at the White House over the past two days as top government officials clashed over how to carry out President Trump’s executive order on keeping together immigrant families at the Mexican border”

President Donald Trump hosted citizens "permanently separated" from their loved ones due to crime . . . "We're gathered today to hear directly from the American victims of illegal immigration. You know you hear the other side, you never hear this side." . . . "These are the American citizens permanently separated from their loved ones. The word permanently being the word that you have to think about. Permanently. They are not separated for a day or two days. Permanently separated," Trump said, seeking to cast a contrast between grieving families and the crisis on the border that has captured the nation's attention and prompted his administration to hastily craft an executive order. Trump incorrectly suggested that the illegal immigrant population is more dangerous than US citizens. . . .

After weeks of blaming the Democrats, Trump kills the best chance for an immigration bill
"Game Over." @RepSanfordSC just told us @realDonaldTrump just completely killed any chance of immigration reform.

[Trump] "Republicans should stop wasting their time on immigration."

And here's the fact: the Democrats have worked repeatedly to find a deal with Trump, even promising funding for The Wall™. He's the one who has rejected them

Think about it this way: maybe Trump doesn't WANT an immigration deal. It's better for him politically to rail against the lack of one -- and blaming others, always blaming. Any possible deal would require compromise and accepting the consequences of an imperfect policy that HE has to take responsibility for. . . two things he is not very good at

Schiff: Nielsen Said Privately That Family Separations May Continue
This is criminal. The Trump admin implemented a policy of taking kids away from their parents WITH NO PLAN FOR HOW TO BRING THEM BACK TOGETHER

“We’re still working through the experience of reunifying kids with their parents after adjudication,” said Steve Wagner, a top official at the Department of Health and Human Services, in a press call Tuesday. He pointed out that the policy was still “relatively new,” and acknowledged that despite the agency’s preference for reuniting detained children with their parents, officials were also working on “identifying alternative sponsors” if reunification isn’t possible. . . . FLOTUS spox confirms Mrs. Trump wore a jacket to visit border kids that reads: "I really don't care. Do you?" Spox says: "It's a jacket. There was no hidden message. . . ."
“Right. It’s definitely not hidden,” Colbert said. “It’s right on the back. And I’m going to guess this is one message she did not steal from Michelle Obama.”
“Remember when Michelle Obama showed her bare arms and went to an oil spill, and Fox News went nuts? I’m sure they’ll have the same reaction to this”
[Trump] “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!
I doubt it means she doesn’t care about the kids. Even the most xenophobic lunatic in the Republican Party wouldn’t imply that they don’t care about the kids, and it’s unlikely in the extreme that Melania deliberately decided to send this message. So what message is she sending? My guess: something Donald related. She’s saying, sure, she’ll do the First Lady thing and go to Texas in place of her husband, but really, she doesn’t care about what he wants or needs anymore.
